VW deploys AR solution for Geometric validation

November 16th, 2021 Darmstadt, Germany

Geometric validation of a vehicle design is a time consuming and costly process, since it involves constructing and inspecting Physical Mock-ups (PMU). Efficiency can be increased when this is done by assessing physical parts with virtual ones using Augmented Reality (AR).

Bring any data: Seamless Data to AR Solution

Volkswagen and Fraunhofer IGD developed and published a novel approach for geometric validation. The "Measurement Based AR for Geometric Validation Within Automotive Engineering and Construction Processes" MVP was build from the beginning on the instant3Dhub platform. The finally deployed system has the following feature:

  • Efficiency in prototyping is increased by mixing physical and virtual parts

  • High Accuracy due to measurement arm

  • Measurements between Real and Virtual Parts

  • PDM integration without conversion or loss of data quality e.g., assembly structure or meta data

  • Large model rendering & Mixed Reality via use of a Visual-Computing-as-a-Service Infrastructure

  • Support for almost any CAD format
